# Right to rent

> See when a right to rent check is verified automatically, how the follow-up date is set, and when you are reminded.

A right to rent check records whether someone can rent in the UK, and the date a follow-up check is due. Yorlet verifies a clear GOV.UK result for you. Anything unclear waits for someone on your team, so a time limit is never treated as unlimited by mistake.

Open [Verifications](https://dashboard.yorlet.com/guardrails/verifications) to see every check. A verified check with a follow-up date shows **Expires soon** in the 28 days before that date, and **Expired** once the date has passed.

## When a check is verified automatically

A share code check is sent to GOV.UK. It is marked **Verified** on its own only when both of these are true:

* GOV.UK confirms the person has the right to rent.
* The time limit is clear. Either there is no limit, or there is a follow-up date that has not already passed.

The check is held for review, with the status **Requires review**, when:

* GOV.UK does not confirm the right to rent, or the result cannot be read.
* The wording does not clearly say whether the right is time-limited.
* A follow-up date is written in a form that cannot be read, such as `01/05/2027`.
* The follow-up date has already passed.
* The check could not be completed, for example because the share code or date of birth was rejected.

A British or Irish passport is verified from the identity check. That result has no follow-up date. Any other document asks the person for a share code or an electronic travel authorisation, which needs a review.

While a share code check is running, the report shows **Processing**. The GOV.UK result, the **PDF**, and the **Screenshot** appear on the verification when the check finishes.

## Review a check

To decide a check that needs review, follow these steps:

1. Open the verification from [Verifications](https://dashboard.yorlet.com/guardrails/verifications).
2. In **Reports**, open **Right to rent**.
3. Read the GOV.UK result. Use **View PDF** and **View screenshot** to check the wording and any follow-up date.
4. Click **Mark verified**, or **Override status** at the top of the page.
5. Set **Right to rent** to **Verified** or **Unverified**.
6. If GOV.UK did not clearly say whether the right is time-limited, set **Time limit**:
   * **Time-limited**: set **Follow-up check due** to the date a follow-up check is due. The date cannot be in the past.
   * **No time limit**: confirm there is no follow-up date. There is then no expiry, and no reminder.
7. Click **Override status**.

> Check the result PDF before you verify. If the time limit is unclear, you cannot approve the check until you choose **Time-limited** or **No time limit**.

A GOV.UK result that already has a clear time limit keeps that follow-up date when you verify it. You only set a date when GOV.UK did not.

For a check that did not come from a GOV.UK share code, such as an electronic travel authorisation, verifying it sets the follow-up date to one year from today.

## Expiry dates

The follow-up date is shown as **Expires at** on the report, and in the **Right to rent expires** column.

* A clear date from GOV.UK is saved as the expiry. The right to rent stays valid through the end of that day.
* A result with no time limit has no expiry.
* An unclear result has no expiry until you set **Follow-up check due**, or confirm **No time limit**.
* If you later change the follow-up date, reminders start again for the new date.

Use the **Right to rent expiring** and **Right to rent expired** tabs on [Verifications](https://dashboard.yorlet.com/guardrails/verifications) to see the checks that need a follow-up.

## Reminders

Each morning, Yorlet looks at verified checks that have a follow-up date. Your team is reminded twice:

* Once, when the date is within the next 28 days.
* Once more, after the date has passed.

Each reminder is sent once. If several checks need attention on the same day, you receive one reminder covering all of them. One check links to that verification. Several checks link to the Verifications list.

Reminders go to team members with the **Admin**, **Operations**, or **Operations Plus** role, in the Dashboard and by email. The email explains that a follow-up check is needed to keep a statutory excuse.

To change how you receive them, follow these steps:

1. Open [Your notifications](https://dashboard.yorlet.com/settings/notifications).
2. Under **Verifications**, find **A right to rent is expiring**.
3. Choose **Dashboard and email**, **Dashboard only**, **Email only**, or **Off**.
4. Click **Save**.
